When you fly on an airplane, the flight attendant instructs you to put your oxygen mask on first, before helping others. And this is important for your survival, just like self-care is. If you run out of oxygen, you aren’t able to help others put their mask on. If you don’t take care of yourself, you may experience burnout, stress, fatigue, reduced mental effectiveness, health problems, anxiety, frustration, and inability to sleep. The best way to continue to be the Superwoman in your loved one’s life is to start with caring for yourself.
Self-care is essential to your well-being and overall sanity, and taking time to listen to what you need and handle it doesn’t make you selfish BUT instead makes you hella strong. I have worked at the same place since 2005, in different positions but my current role is the one I sincerely feel the most passionate and connected to. I’m helping Black and Latinos break against all odds and graduate college, and believe it or not it can be stressful and rewarding at the same damn time. I have experienced change, loss, and transition to name a few. I have needed to find ways to care for my mind, body, and soul during these moments and wanted to share a few methods to help with my madness.
Also note, self-care doesn’t have to be expensive. I will share a few that will bring you inner peace, a sense of calmness, and release of stress- for Zero 99.
Unplug
Try to unplug for a few hours. I know this can be difficult when we are constantly checking our Instagram or Snapchat feeds but allow yourself time to detach from the world, even if it’s for a few hours. Try to keep your phone off to ensure an undisturbed sleep.
Get your creative juices flowing
What better way to stimulate your mind and de-stress at the same time throw drawing, painting, or coloring just like you did when you were a child. Another way is putting together a 1000+ puzzle.
Try something NEW!
Above all nothing beats finding time to read a book you’ve been putting off, or even binging on This Is Us. Even if it’s ordering a yummy dessert or checking out the new Creamery, you deserve to indulge in whatever you please.
Jam to some of your Favs.
Make a playlist on Spotify or listen to the newest album out, and blast music throughout your place. I usually escape into my headphones listening to one of my favorite Spotify lists, Are & Be (get it R&B LOL). Just relax and jam on.
Make use of your tub.
Put those new candles to use with a tub of bath bombs. Grab a nice glass of wine (just one) and let your worries melt away.
Spa It Up at home
Came across new DIY facial mask recipes or body scrubs on Pinterest, staying at home is the perfect time to give your skin the love it deserves.
Try not to put self-care on the bottom of your to-list. Start today and make it a regular habit with some of my favorites or simply create your own. It won’t be long before you start to feel at ease.
Yessssss Angie! I swear I say this to people all the time. Take care of yourself first, and allow you to be the best you for others. Great post.
